The Abbey as a Prison
During the French Revolution, many religious institutions were closed or repurposed. Mont Saint-Michel was transformed into a prison, housing political prisoners and common criminals. This dark chapter lasted through the 19th century, damaging the abbey’s structures and reputation.
The prison was finally closed in 1863, largely due to efforts by historians and preservationists who recognized Mont Saint-Michel’s cultural value.
Restoration and UNESCO Recognition
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, restoration efforts began to repair and preserve Mont Saint-Michel. The French government and private organizations undertook extensive projects to restore the abbey’s medieval grandeur and improve access to the island.
In 1979, Mont Saint-Michel and its bay were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing the site’s exceptional cultural, historical, and architectural significance. shutdown123
